Southern Maryland is a beautiful, warm, humid region with a long history of agriculture. Even though the name might just apply to parts of Middle and Eastern Maryland, many people living there call it South West or South Meck. The region has its own charm and culinary offerings that are worth exploring. If you visit several places in one go, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Here’s a list of the best things to do in Southern Maryland.

explore the area

If you’re in Southern Maryland, you’re in a great position to learn more about the area and its history. Explore the area, eat what’s around you, and explore the local cuisine. You might even consider exploring the nearby states if you’re an agriculture fan. South West Maryland provides an interesting backdrop to an agricultural landscape. Many people call the area home and still live in the same house they first moved into. If you’re lucky, you may even discover an ancient house that has not been changed since colonial times. This is a stunning view and great for reminiscing about old times.

## eat what’s around you

You might be lucky enough to find a small restaurant serving southern food in your new home. Dine in the backroom of a house where everyone but the owner is from South West Maryland. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a sign that reads “No Reservations.” You might have to ask for a table at a public table. If you’re lucky, you might also spot a family in the front who are from South West. A family can be as old as the owner and a generation.

## explore the local cuisine

If you’re lucky, you might see a local restaurant serving Southern food. If you’re not, walk around and look on the menu. Most restaurants have a section dedicated to Southern food. You can expect to pay a little more for Southern food than you would for normal dishes, but you’re probably going to pay more anyway. Be realistic. There are a few places that serve Southern food reasonably well, but most places are not very good.

## shop for a few things you don’t have in your regular grocery store

You’re probably going to spend a small fortune on items you don’t need or that your local grocery store doesn’t carry. You might spend less on groceries than you’d like, but you’re still going to spend a lot more than you would for items you do. You’re probably going to spend about the same amount on gas and groceries each month, even if you make a conscious decision to go to the grocery store less often.

## take in some natural beauty

We’re all more attracted to the shiny and beautiful than the nontraditional and mundane. This might seem like a negative, but it’s actually one of the best things about Southern Maryland. Natural beauty will line your wallet and make your vacation experience more affordable. You might not think about it that way, though. Natural beauty is expensive and will probably add up over time as you go on your visit. When you’re in Southern Maryland, it doesn’t matter where you go or what you do. You’re likely going to come across some wild, beautiful, or otherwise unheralded natural beauty that you’re going to love to bits.

## dance at one of the many parties going on in Southern Maryland

There are so many beautiful, magical, and bizarre Southern Maryland parties going on that it can be difficult to choose just one. If you want to try something different, a night at a party might be in your future. Try going to a party in Annapolis, hosted by the THC (The hash house) and featuring DJ’s Dom and Jay. If you’re looking for a getaway that’s more than just hang out, look no further. Western MD has some of the best parties in the region. If you’re looking for something different, you can usually find parties on R Street in Annapolis. R Street is always partyzy and you’re likely going to enjoy yourself more than anything.

## make a few new friends and have some fun together

When you’re on a vacation, you’re probably going to spend a lot of time with your friends. Southern Maryland has a lot of fun parties and clubs, but we’d strongly recommend trying your hand at a few of them yourself. Try the Work In Southwestern Maryland, an annual party in Annapolis. Work In is an industry event with tons of character and fun people. If you’re looking for a night on the town, look no further. Work is the ultimate destination for Southern Maryland. You’re likely going to meet some of the most amazing people you’ll ever meet.

## return home with a souvenir or two

You’re probably going to be extremely tempted to return home with some of the many things you’ve been saved by going to Southern Maryland. You might end up with a rolled up piece of burrito heaven, a family heirloom, or a beautiful vintage prop. You won’t be disappointed, but you should plan ahead. Take some pictures and remember that everything is going to be fine.

## Summing up

This is a beautiful, warm, humid region with a long history of agriculture. You’re in a great position to learn more about the area and its history. Eat what you can, explore the local cuisine, shop for a few things you don’t have in your regular grocery store, take in some natural beauty, and dance at one of the many parties going on in Southern Maryland. You’re probably going to spend a lot of money, but it’s definitely not the way to go.
